PCI Express devices communicate via a logical connection called an interconnect or link.A link is a point-to-point communication channel between two PCI Express ports allowing both of them to send and receive ordinary PCI requests (configuration, I/O or memory read/write) and interrupts (INTx, MSI or MSI-X).
Read the manual. Seriously... I know that there are people who are all into reading boards... I generally read boards. But reading a board only gets you so far, after that, you really need to read the documentation.

Why Are the PCI Express Ports on My Motherboard Different Sizes? x16, x8, x4, and x1 Explained Pci express x1 2 slot configuration

M.2 is a slot that can interface with SATA 3.0 (the cable that’s probably connected to your desktop PC’s storage drive right now), PCI Express 3.0 (the default interface for graphics cards and other major expansion devices), and even USB 3.0.
The PCI standard permits multiple independent PCI buses to be connected by bus bridges that will forward operations on one bus to another when required. Although conventional PCI tends not to use many bus bridges, PCI Express systems use many; each PCI Express slot appears to be a separate bus, connected by a bridge to the others. Posted writes
i have an ibm s51 with one pci-e x1 slot and one pci 2.1 slot. is it possible to put a pci-e x16 card into an x1 slot and if so is it actually 16x slower, or what is the performance penalty or would i be better off getting a pci vid card. the rig is for my girlfriend, doesn't play a ton of games, and only has a 15" crt, so low res mostly.

PCI Express, technically Peripheral Component Interconnect Express but often seen abbreviated as PCIe or PCI-E, is a standard type of connection for internal devices in a computer. Generally, PCI Express refers to the actual expansion slots on the motherboard that accept PCIe-based expansion cards and to the types of expansion cards themselves.
There is also one PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot, which works at x4 maximum speed (x1 speed if the additional USB 3.0 ports are enabled), and two PCI Express 2.0 x1 slots.

I'm getting ready to build a new z97 system.
The system is going to be be air cooled with a large 140mm heatsink.
The motherboard I had in mind was a Z97 OC Formula.
The problem is, the cooler is not going to fit on the board with the graphics card in the top slot.
If I move it to a different slot, will it still run at x16?
Most motherboards just look at the lowest slot with a card installed pci express x1 2 slot configuration split it up according to presets.
Even running at 8x isn't going to have a serious impact on anything though.
Looking share pci express card pci slot right! spec page and page 2 of the manuallooks like any of the three slots will give 16 if there is only one card that's the way I understand it anyway.

Haven't bought it yet, but probably a NH-U14S.
I checked the pdf manual, I couldn't find anything that specifically that it'd run at full speed in any of the 3.

So they are saying it both pci express x1 2 slot configuration, but according to Intel, the slot is not a chipset limitation: as there are three PCI Express 3.
In contrast, my Asus board says "2 x PCIe 3.
BUT the Asrock gets even more fun if you are using M.
Of course, as we've established, ASRock's Z97 Extreme6 is unique.
It does have a two-lane M.
But it also employs what ASRock calls Ultra M.
This slot isn't affected by the chipset.
And if you drop a PCIe M.
In exchange, you can't run a graphics card using the processor's 16 lanes, instead bumping it down to eight.
Perhaps more severely, SLI and CrossFire configurations are out, too.
Ah thanks for clearing that up.
I did not know that about the M.
Do you know if thats the same with every manufacture or is it just the express slot 34 ssd Asrock rigged it up?
Care to clarify that?
ASFAIK the current Z97 boards from Asrock are regarded as some of the best for a bootable M.
I think it is pretty much a given that future chipsets will be find a way through the current limitations.
